Some hikes go exactly as planned. This one didn't — and it turned out to be one of the best we've done.

The Plan That Changed

We set out to hit Wave Cave via the Carney Springs Trail — a route known for being direct and punishing. But when we pulled up, the trailhead was permanently closed. Just desert, a locked gate, and zero explanation.

So we improvised.

About 0.7 miles down the road, we spotted access to the Lost Goldmine Trail — a route steeped in Arizona legend and far more interesting than anything we originally planned.

Not the cleanest line on paper. But that's exactly what made it worth doing.

Through the Lost Goldmine

The Lost Goldmine Trail isn't just another desert path. It runs along the base of the Superstition Mountains — the same mountains where stories of hidden gold and vanished miners still circulate to this day.

The terrain starts off deceptively manageable — rolling desert, scattered saguaros, wide-open views. Don't let that fool you. The heat builds. The elevation creeps. The desert doesn't hand you anything for free.

This is the kind of trail that makes you earn it early.

The Climb to Carney Springs

Once we linked up with the Carney Springs connector, the hike shifted into a different gear. Less forgiving. More vertical. More exposed.

Loose rock, steep grades, constant sun — if you're carrying weight, this section is going to let you know. But the higher you climb, the more the desert opens up behind you. The payoff is real.

The Final Push to Wave Cave

Once you connect to the Wave Cave Trail, the destination comes into view. Don't get comfortable — the last stretch is short but demands your full attention. Steep, rugged, a bit of scrambling. Then you step inside.

And everything changes.

The Reward

Wave Cave isn't just a viewpoint — it's a moment. A natural rock formation curves overhead like a breaking wave, framing the entire valley below. One of the most iconic views in Arizona, and it hits even harder when you took the long way to get there.

No crowds when we arrived. Just silence, wind, and a view you don't forget.

What to Know Before You Go

Water: Plan for 1 liter per hour minimum. Arizona heat is not optional.
Start early — the trail gets brutal once the sun climbs.
Solid hiking shoes are non-negotiable. The terrain is loose the entire way.
No shade for most of the route. Sun protection matters.
Navigation is key — you're linking three separate trails. Know your route before you go.
