Siphon Draw Trail to the Flatiron — Superstition Mountains, Arizona

Siphon Draw Trail to the Flatiron

Superstition Mountains, Arizona

No Roads. No Rules. Built for the Wild.

Brad and I have done a lot of hikes together. This one has a category of its own. Hard. Fun. Brutal. Worth every step. If you’re looking for a trail that will put you through it and reward you for it — Siphon Draw is the one.

Trail Overview

Siphon Draw Trail sits in the Superstition Mountains, just east of Phoenix. It’s approximately 5.5 miles round trip with significant elevation gain — and by “significant” we mean the kind that has you recalibrating your life choices somewhere around mile two. The Flatiron looms above you for most of the climb, so you always know what you’re working toward.

Starting the Hike

We hit the trailhead early to beat the heat — which is non-negotiable in Arizona. The first stretch eases you in: desert floor, saguaros, open sky, the kind of scenery that makes you forget you’re about to suffer. Enjoy it. It doesn’t last.

The Ascent

Once the trail tilts upward, it doesn’t really let up. Rocky terrain, loose footing in sections, and the sun tracking you the entire way. Brad and I kept each other moving — laughing, talking, occasionally questioning our decisions. We documented everything: photos, videos, the whole run. That’s part of why we do this.

The views that open up on the way up are spectacular. Every rest stop becomes a photo stop. The valley drops away behind you, and the Superstitions stretch out in every direction.

Reaching the Flatiron

After the full push, we reached the Flatiron. Standing up there — looking out at the Sonoran Desert stretching to the horizon, rugged mountains framing the backdrop — it hits different when you earned it. We filmed, took photos, took it all in.

One note: if you make it to the top, take your time up there. Film more than you think you need. I wish I’d done a longer video and more trail commentary. Lesson learned for the next one.

Tips Before You Go

  • Start Early: The desert sun turns this trail into a furnace by mid-morning.

  • Water: Half a liter per hour under normal conditions. Arizona sun? Push that to 1 liter per hour. For this trail, bring at least 2–3 liters.

  • Footwear: Solid hiking shoes with grip and ankle support. I run Merrell with non-slip laces — the difference on the downhill is real. Keeps your toes from jamming forward the whole descent.

  • Pace yourself: The trail rewards patience. Push too hard early and you’ll feel it on the way back down.

  • Document everything: Bring a GoPro or mount your phone. You’ll want footage from every angle.

Final Thoughts

Hard. Fun. Amazing. Exhausting. In that order, all at once.

Siphon Draw is the kind of hike that reminds you why you do this — the physical challenge, the desert, the views, the stories you carry back down with you. Brad and I will be back out there soon. More trails, more footage, more desert.
